Types of TEFL teaching jobs in Spain
When you mention TEFL, most people think of a teacher standing up in front of 30 children and teaching English. Nothing could be further from the reality of teaching English in Madrid and the rest of Spain.
In Company TEFL Jobs
In company classes in Spain usually consist of teaching both general and business English to adults in their place of work. The prime teaching hours are usually 8-10 am, 1-4 pm and 7-9 pm. The group classes usually consist of between 4 and 8 students. There are also a large amount of one-to-one classes usually with senior managers and directors.
Group classes can range from elementary to advanced classes. Those who have one-to-one classes tend to be intermediate and above (there are always exceptions). The one-to-one classes tend to be both a role as teacher and adviser often helping with their day to day work such as emails, presentations, getting ready for an international meeting.
As a TEFL teacher in Spain you'll discover that the level of English in the country can be quite varied, even among highly qualified professionals, so most "Business English" classes often feature extensive "General English" reviews.
You need a good balance of group and one-2-one classes as all one-2-one classes can be very draining, while group classes require much more planning and dealing with varying needs, goals and abilities.
Blended Learning - A popular TEFL approach in Spain
Telephone classes have been around for a long time but with today's modern technology these have really changed into blended learning classes. With lots of the more modern teaching agencies in Madrid and Spain, you will have access to a teaching platform. Both you and the student log in to the platform and down load your materials. You then normally phone the student, more often then not using skype (www.skype.com) and after the class send them their corrections and the topic for the following week. They can often fit into the hours where you don't have traditional classes and therefore giving your monthly salary an extra boost.
TEFL academies in Spain
Another of the big options open to TEFL teachers in Spain is to give classes in one (or more!) of Spain's thousands of Language academies (academias de idiomas). You'll generally start no earlier than 5pm, first with children's classes and then, from 6/7pm onwards adults classes (Our TEFL course will have prepared you for both!). Classes will often go on until 10pm, so be prepared for late dinners!
Private English Classes
Virtually all TEFL teachers in Spain will do private classes at one time or another. Some teachers will only do private classes (always referred in Spain as "clases particulares") while for others, these classes are a fall-back during the gaps between in-company or in-academy TEFL classes. We will give you all the information you need to get 'hooked up' with the private market, where to find the contacts, what to do in the first few classes and how to keep yourself safe and well paid.
Intensive English Courses
Like blended learning, intensive course are becoming increasingly popular in Spain. They can range from 1 day course to 5 day residential courses (usually in very nice hotels with Spas and good food in some really interesting locations).
We have helped run courses for a range of big corporate clients such as Vodafone (5 day residential course) and Abbots (weekend intensive).
Greg Collins - Director of Kleinsoncollins
In our experience, the teachers recommended to us by TtMadrid have always turned out to be well trained, well presented, well prepared, well organized and self-sufficient. Some of our star teachers have had their humble beginnings as TtMadrid graduates. Natasha and her team have put together an excellent program that produces teachers with the ability to teach the structures of the English language along with the imagination to produce their own class material whenever necessary.
