Be Realistic About Accommodation
Accommodation is a difficult issue in Spain, and we will help you as much as possible. We will send you an Accommodation Request Form that you will need to fill out. Once we have received it back completed, we will send it to an agency to begin their search. Please be aware that accommodation is much more complicated in Spain than what you are probably used to, and it may or may not be what you expect. Young students in Spain tend to study near their home towns and live with their parents into their 30s, and this is still considered very young. Many people who consider themselves non-smokers may just be LIGHT smokers. Many landlords rent out extra rooms in their apartment and will live in the same flat with their boarders. Please be aware of these cultural issues and be open-minded as you enter a new country.
After sending your details to the agency we work with, they will let us know a week or so before you arrive (not earlier), what flats are available that will be suitable for you. This is very dependent on your arrival date. They will send us all of the information they have on it, and we will send it to you with as much as we can tell you about the neighborhood, etc. Once you approve the flat, we will send confirmation to the agency who will arrange for someone to be at the flat with keys when you arrive.
On the first business day after your arrival, you will need to go to the agency with your fees in cash. The fees are: 60 euro service fee, an approximate rent (depending on your needs) of 450 euros per month (4 weeks) and a refundable deposit of 50% of 4 weeks rent. You will always pay the agency directly, as neither the landlords nor us deal with your finances regarding rent. After the first month, you will return to the agency every 4 weeks to pay rent or negotiate other accommodation. To get your refund back you will need to give the agency a minimum of two weeks departure notice, left the apartment in the state that you found it and returned your door keys to the agent.

Although I'm not a graduate of TtMadrid, I'm still part of the TT family as an already TEFL certified Lifestyles member. What's that? It's what TTMadrid does for you if you'd like to teach in Spain, are already certified and need some help getting started. Here's how my story goes:
I'm a single mom, a young 53, with two grown kids whom I encouraged to get out there and try everything, go places, experience things. We're Americans, so that means we're from Europe, Asia, the West Indies, you name it. There are many places we can call home.
Fortunately both of them have taken my advice to heart, so when my son told me about vacationing in Croatia with some of his Italian friends and that it was such a cool place he could see himself living there, I sat right in front of the computer and typed "Teaching English in Croatia".
As I scanned over the list that populated the screen, TtMadrid was at the top. I was confused and retyped my request. The same thing happened. When I tried to focus on Croatia, I found only generalizations about employment and difficulties about contact. I repeated this ritual on more than one day. And, I also decided to read what TTMadrid had to say.
They sounded good, almost too good. I'm not a novice to teaching in other countries. I've lived in Istanbul, Turkey and in Italy, both in the north and in Rome where I received my certification. I started communicating through email and asking my standard barrage of questions that has been built from experience. Every answer was good and honest and I couldn't help but be infected with the positivism that is characteristically, as I've discovered, TtMadrid.
I bought a plane ticket. When I told them that, I was sent an e-application for accommodation. They work with an organization called Accommadrid who sets everything up for you for nominal cost and alot of convenience. I had a place to go when I arrived. I was told my options for getting to my new residence which was spot on the mark. I was given metro directions to get to TtMadrid and also received communication from Accommadrid for payment and contract signing.
I met everyone the day I arrived and interviewed for jobs the day after with the class that had just graduated. I made friends that same day. Jet lag be damned, what a welcome! Instead of being the ship that was knocked over the head with a bottle of champagne for the send off, I was welcomed with one.
I have been here since May 22nd of this year 2008, and TTMadrid has been with me every step of the way. I have access to the school for internet, resources, copies. They've helped me get my sim card for my cell, open a bank account and keep tabs on my accommodation satisfaction. Any problems and together with Accommadrid a new living arrangement is made. You really could not ask for anything more. Oh, and I've made more new friends with a class that will be graduating soon, giving us yet another opportunity to dance the night away.
If you'd like to be certified I would most definitely recommend the course. I've hung around the school enough to know well the quality education and training that is provided. If you are already certified, then contact them and look into the Lifestyles Package. It's the best foot forward to start with in Spain. TtMadrid has got your back.
